Facts and figures about participation

The promotion prize

... will indepently from the election of the Kids Design Award winner be awarded to one or several participants. Selected industry representatives will award it to the most promising product ideas. In the frame of the product sponsorship they will support you in the further development of the product through to its market launch. The ready-for-production and marketable product can apply to get a trade stand at Kind + Jugend 2020 free of charge. Decision is due to Koelnmesse GmbH.

Koelnmesse presents the nominated product ideas to exhibitors of the Kind und Jugend, which enables them to support the designers and further develop the product to market maturity.

Approved products

Approved products

Design students, designers and up-and-coming designers from all over the world are invited to participate if they graduated no more than five years ago, i.e. after 1 September 2015. Registration of groups of up to 3 persons is also possible.

Products are admitted to the award,

  • Which are not yet ready for the market and are at most in preparation for the market
  • Which are not yet manufactured in series production as prototypes
  • Which differ substantially in forum and appearance, material properties, handling and/or technology from products already on the market

The Selection

On behalf of Koelnmesse, an international jury curates the designs submitted by design students and young designers from all over the world and nominates up to ten designs, which will be presented to an international audience as 1:1 prototypes.

The following criteria will be taken into account when awarding the Kid Design:

  • Innovative character
  • Form / function
  • Level of the overall aesthetics
  • Choice of the materials
  • Level of ecological quality/safety (DEIN norms, etc.)
  • Usability in a family sense (children and adults can use the same product)
  • Ergonomics (type of use)
  • Durability of the products (quality)
  • Usability/diverse usages (place of usage)
  • Suitability for children (playing fun, versatility, flexibility)

The ten nominees will present their prototypes personally to the jury, tentatively two days before the trade fair. In this final round, the jury will select the winner of the Kids-Design-Award 2020 and also the sponsors will get a first impression for awarding the advancement award.
