Children grow up incredibly quickly. Not only their clothing is too small before you know it. So are their beds, cabinets and chairs. The solution: clever children's furniture that grows with the child or can be used in various ways over a longer period of time.

Only yesterday, their parents had to support them while they were sitting; today they have to have eyes in the back of their heads and pry the little climbers off the bookshelves. The demands made of their own environment, and thus also of the children's room change with the increasing mobility and independence of the kids. Furniture that grows with the child or multifunctional furniture makes sense so that parents don't need to buy new furniture suitable for the age of the child every year.

That starts with the heart of the children's room, the bed. The classic cot can often be quickly transformed into a children's bed with only a few movements, in that one removes the bars gradually and adjusts the height of the lying surface. When the child does in fact outgrow the crib at some point, the little bed can often be converted into a comfortable sofa – like the "Enzo" children's bed from Pinolino . Another option is to stack cots to create bunk beds when a sibling arrives. When the bunk beds are no longer wanted, or when the kids get their own bedrooms, the beds can be converted into single beds again.

The transformation artist: the diaper changing unit as a stylish deco element

Another important item of furniture in the early years is the diaper changing unit. When the little ones have outgrown their diapers, that doesn't have to mean the end for the unit. Many have a removable attachment and can later be used as a "completely normal" sideboard – as an elegant deco element or a practical item of furniture with a lot of storage space. Thus, for example, the Pan diaper changing unit from Pinolino is moved to the hallway without the removable attachment and is then used to store scarves and umbrellas.

When the kids get bigger and go to school, the focus is on the desk. The problem with fixed-position desks: they are too high in the beginning, and then too small. Tables with adjustable heights like Diego from PAIDI adapt not only to ergonomic needs, but also to various activities. However, the tabletop is also flexible and can be angled for the right posture, whether for painting, crafts, reading or writing.

Used especially frequently is seating furniture, but it has to be replaced especially often in order to adapt to the size of the child. A comfortable solution that even looks good: colourful beanbags like Elma from The Sitting Bull , which, in addition to promoting relaxation for the little ones, can also often be "repurposed" into caves with the help of blankets and pillows. The Bambino bench from Geuther convinces through its multifunctionality, because, in addition to being used for a nice coffee get-together, it can also be used as a chest.

One aspect besides the safety factor is especially important for durable furniture meant to grow with the child: robustness. A material often selected here is solid wood, which can not only take a lot of punishment, but is also environmentally-compatible and can be sanded and polished as required.
