Kind + Jugend 2018: Young designers distinguished

Design is especially important for children's products, because it can encourage and challenge, develop creativity and abilities, create a connection with the environment and, most especially, be fun. In the context of Kind + Jugend, the world's largest trade fair for baby and children's outfitting, the theme of design therefore traditionally plays an important role. In order to also offer primarily young designers the opportunity to present themselves to the trade world and in this way establish contacts, the trade fair presents the KIDS Design AWARD each year. It promotes product concepts and studies that are not yet commercially available. Ten designers and their designs are nominated. Kind + Jugend enables all ten nominees the chance at a product sponsorship, because their designs are presented to the manufacturers and traders at the trade fair in an attractive special event. The goal of the sponsorship should be to jointly develop a prototype to the point of market maturity. The winner will be announced on the Trend Forum stage on the first trade fair day of Kind + Jugend. The KIDS Design AWARD special event takes place in hall 11.1, stand E 50 F 59.

140 submissions, originating from industry, design and science, were presented to the expert jury for evaluation. Following intensive discussions, the winner was distinguished and honourable mentions made. However, the jurors expressly praised the high design quality of the competition as a whole and of the submitted designs.

Gintare Cerniauskaite is the winner of the KIDS Design AWARD 2018
This year, the Lithuanian designer Gintare Cerniauskaite, who completed her training at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, won the KIDS Design AWARD with her "Upe" product.

Upe is an educational wooden building game that helps children learn to read, write and count by composing letters and numbers from pre-cut shapes. In that the main shapes of the letters and numbers are recognised and can be independently constructed, a child is encouraged to experiment with various possible forms of writing. These forms can also be used to create roads, bridges, castles, cartoon figures or anything else one can imagine.

Honourable mention for Lisanne Koning
The jury felt that the "Inside the box" product from Lisanne Koning was also deserving of an honourable mention. Help sometimes comes in boxes, and there is no place for toys there. Food, medication and clothing are of course important, but toys are also important for children in disaster areas.

The 'Inside the box' cardboard box is a standard box with templates printed onto the inside of the box for creating toys from the box itself. Toys can in this way be sent to disaster areas and the box be used again.

The other nominees:

·Pascal Heußner: Cradle to Cradle
·Florentine Voigt: well140 / welle60
